During the last few weeks of the year many of us become reflective of the last twelve months.
What have we done? Have we achieved our goals? Made new friends? Lost loved ones? Fought battles and won or lost?
The media recalls names of celebrities who passed away, shows the year in photos to see our world's greatest and worst moments.
It's only natural as the 'New Year' of our lives comes close enough to touch we think about what lies ahead or what we have done with the 365 days we just had. Could we have improved on any of our decisions? Tried any harder?
Perhaps writers, poets, and artists are more susceptible to nostalgia. Maybe we are true romantics at heart who strive for the ideal, the true love, the perfect home, the dream job. I know I am very ambitious and have goals firmly in place in my mind. A book a month. Can I continue this into the next year? It won't be for lack of trying.
But more than an individual goal, should we think on a larger level? What can we do to give back to our community. Our lifestyle will forever not only impact us but generations to come.
Will we appreciated our loved ones more because of those we lost that were dear to us? Or will we live the same year over and over again?
As you pass through the last few weeks of December, think about who you are and what you want to do with your life for the next year. Because inevitably you will once again be looking another year in the face.
Will you be kind and give to the people in your life, treat associates and strangers with humanity? Or will you take out all of your anger and frustration on others, simply because you can't succeed in your rage and hate?
Life is about choices, luck, fate, and maybe just an ounce of wisdom tossed in for good measure.
Personally, I'll be happy if I keep moving down the path I have chosen. I have no past regrets and a future filled with new fantasies to write, new fans to meet, and adventures ahead that are unimaginable.
Like Jim Morrison said, "Did you have a good world when you died? -enough to base a movie on?”
If not, time to let go of the past, the anger, the jealousy, and start living again.
January 1st 2012...a new beginning, or a life poorly lived. You decide.
